Gemma Gourlay

Director of Social Sustainability, Robertson Group

I have worked with Robertson for nearly 9 years now and have enjoyed every minute. At the time of joining Robertson I was made redundant after the housebuilder I worked for went into administration at the height of the recession. I walked past a ringing phone in the office and that was how I found about the role at Robertson (True story). Joining as a Document Controller I would never have believed I’d find my way to Director of Social Sustainability, overseeing a function within the business that I played a key part in creating with 13 members of staff from Orkney to Sheffield. Our primary role as a function is to add value to the projects we deliver across the business. We work with our clients to understand their needs in the communities we work in resulting in us working with a wide variety of community stakeholders creating opportunities for them to benefit from the projects we deliver, it's a hugely rewarding role and department to work in.

Over my time with Robertson I’ve had the opportunity to broaden my skillset and develop my knowledge through professional development, most recently completing a Level 7 qualification in Leadership & Management through Chartered Management Institute.

Robertson is one of the UK’s largest independently owned construction, infrastructure, development and support services groups. Our products and services span the entire built environment lifecycle, and the projects we have delivered cover the whole of the UK, from Orkney to Cornwall. Serving the public and private sectors, we are experts in regeneration, investment, construction, civil engineering, off-site manufacture, facilities management, energy services, housebuilding for the private and affordable markets, property development, building services and asset management. Team Robertson has a set of core values, and to us they are more than just words. Everything we do – the way we partner with our clients and supply chain; our approach to recruiting and retaining new people; our treatment of each project and contract; our relationships with each other and the people we encounter as we go about our business – these daily activities are all informed by the same set of values. Harnessing innovation, productivity and business sustainability, we belong to a knowledgeable and trusted group of people who are passionate about transforming the built environment.
