Making Scotland the Worlds First ACE- Aware Nation

We are delighted to announce that we will be co-hosting a national conference in 2018, in partnership with Connected Baby.

Making Scotland the World’s First ACE-Aware Nation will help to boost the active conversations our country is now having about how to put the science of trauma and relationships at the heart of all our policies and practices.

How do we put connection at the heart of absolutely everything we do in Scotland? And how do we get this information to every single citizen of our country? These are the questions we’ll be asking in this national event, with seats available for more than 1000 of us.

Best news of all? Guess who is coming to help us think about creating that future? Dr Nadine Burke-Harris! She’s gained an international reputation for her transformational work as founder of the Center for Youth Wellness, in San Francisco. Most Scots are likely to know her from her central role in the documentary Resilience, which has taken Scotland by storm in 2017.

Dr Nadine Burke-Harris

If you loved what Dr. Burke-Harris had to say on screen, now you can hear her speak in person!

The partnership team of TIGERS and connected baby is beyond delighted to be able to bring Dr Burke-Harris to Scotland. Please stay tuned for more news on how you can join us on 26 September at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow.

Together, we can make this vision a reality. Scotland really can be The World’s First ACE-Aware Nation.

Coffey Construction Support for TIGERS Apprentices

Coffey Construction MA
"David Sinclair shaking the hand of Coffey Construction Operations Manager, Cathal Kerrigan with Manager Dougie McBain looking on"

This week I visited Coffey Construction to thank them for their support for TIGERS Modern Apprentices who were adversely effected by the recent liquidation of Carillion Plc. Following the announcement on the 15th January 2018, Coffey Construction made contact with TIGERS, through Scottish Water, to offer their support in shape of two employment opportunities on their projects, one of which David Sinclair has successfully undertaken. Following the initial discussions that took place between TIGERS and Coffey Construction, Cathal Kerrigan, Operations Manager, made it clear that his organisation were looking for young people who had a strong work ethic, great punctuality and respect for the opportunity being offered to them.

During our meeting at their project in Greenock this week, Cathal highlighted that Coffey Construction, who were founded in 1974, work in every major construction sector throughout the UK and Ireland, are in an excellent period of growth and are aspiring to build a workforce for the future. Cathal also highlighted that Coffey Construction often visit local schools to speak about their projects, which can range from large scale drainage projects to rail and road construction delivery and that they have struggled in the past to encourage young people that the sector is a great career choice, something he hopes through partnership working with TIGERS can be overcome.

David Sinclair, who was performing well at the TIGERS Construction Skills Academy when Carillion Plc fell into liquidation, is relishing his new opportunity and over the last two weeks has worked on at least three different elements of the project having been involved in concreting, kerb laying and providing support for other tradesman on site.

"I am over the moon to have been offered an opportunity at Coffey Construction. Everyone has been great. I have already been involved in great work and I am booked into take part in 2 or 3 different short courses over the coming weeks."

David Sinclair, Coffey Construction, General Operative

"David is off to a great start. His attitude to work over his first two weeks has been excellent. David is travelling from Maryhill to Greenock on public transport every day and is one of the first people through the door, which highlights his commitment to his new role - I believe he has a great future here at Coffey Construction."

Dougie McBain, Coffey Construction, Manager

Coffey Construction have built on this recent success by also offering an opportunity to TIGERS Apprentice Kieran Morrison, who started his new role with Coffey Construction on the 19th of March 2018.

Julie Dey - Career Women and Mum of Twins

Julie Dey's Twin Boys

Yesterday, during my lunch break I went a walk with Julie Dey, Human Resource Advisor, to discuss how working at TIGERS has benefited her being a career women and a mum of twins. Who says you can’t do both? I work closely with Julie, she is extremely hard working, dedicated, enthusiastic and motivated. Honestly, an asset to TIGERS. I was curious to see how she manages to balance it all. Below is a summary of our conversation during our “Walk and Talk” interview.

Could you please explain how TIGERS has helped you create a balance?

Julie explained that she is very dedicated to both her career and being a mum and that both are extremely important to her. Julie said she feels she wants to do well in her career for her own development but also to be role model to her sons by showing them what they can achieve by working hard. Julie also explained that being a Mum is very rewarding and getting the balance between family and work is important to her.

Julie explained that her son’s (Harrison & Ryan) have recently started at the new local Thomas Muir Primary school, a school where TIGERS had Apprentices on during the new school build through their partnership with Carillion & Morgan Sindall Group. Julie explained to ease their transition from nursery to school she felt it was important to be present at “Drop Off & Pick Up”. When their start date was approaching Julie spoke with her Manager, Laura Devennie who is Corporate Manager for TIGERS and asked for a more flexible approach to her working hours. TIGERS is a Relationship Led Practice company and encourages all employees to have a healthy work life balance and an agreement was made which would allow Julie to be present for her sons at this important time. Julie said she was extremely grateful to Laura for allowing this to happen.

What benefits of a Flexible Working Pattern brought to you personally and to your family?

Julie highlighted several ways in which she feels this new working pattern has helped her and her family. Julie explained that she feels she is more productive when working at home and it is allowing her time to step away and really think about her work. Also by having fewer distractions she feels she is achieving more which is helping TIGERS achieve its goals. Julie also explained that when she first told her sons that she would be picking them up from school, they were so happy! When speaking with Julie she used the words happy, productive, family, balance, working mum, career.
