Sean McLaughlin Modern Apprenticeship Journey

MSP Visit

“I began TIGERS in 2011 where I undertook a Construction course in Bishopbriggs, during which I learned employability skills as well as CSCS training before undertaking my CSCS test which I passed and was put forward for a Carillion Interview. TIGERS was great, the most important thing is to keep your head down and put in the hard work.

On starting my Carillion Apprenticeship I learned the basics of General Construction Operations before swiftly moving out onto site with George Leslie Ltd. My first site was the Loch Katrine Viaduct where I quickly realised George Leslie Ltd were an employer that would support my career development. After spending almost 12 months on placement with George Leslie Ltd, I learned a great deal about the Civil Engineering sector, it was great experience to be involved in such a project. Whilst undertaking my Apprenticeship I passed my driving test, which I knew would help me gain employment and I was shortly rewarded with a full time position as a General Construction Operative.

3 Years later and I am now on the Wemyss Bay Ferry terminal site which again is a remarkable project to be part of, not for the faint hearted in the winter! I now have more experience working on Civil Engineering projects and I have a wider range of skills and tickets such as Abrasive Wheels, Street Works, Dumper Driver, Confined Space, PASMA and Cat and Genny.

Overall my experience has led to a massive build up in my self-confidence and with the continued support of George Leslie Ltd I am hoping to progress on to a supervisory role in the near future. I would like to say to any young person out there that if you keep your head down, turn up every day and put in lots of effort then opportunities will open for you, you just then need to grab them with both hands. I would like to thank TIGERS, Carillion and George Leslie Ltd for firstly supporting me then providing me with those opportunities to start and progress my career”

MSP Annabelle Ewing Presents TIGERS with IIYP Gold Award

MSP Visit

After a fantastic 2015, winning awards such as the STF 'Most Innovative and Creative Employability Provider', we started off 2016 with the great news that we had been awarded the Investors in Young People Gold Award! This is an award we value highly as it is a subject matter we are so passionate about, progressing young people into sustainable employment.

On the day, we had both Laura Peacock of Investors in Young People, and the Minister for Youth and Women's Employment Annabelle Ewing visit our Training Center to meet some of our Modern Apprentices as well as spend some time with Managing Director, John Gibson, and Operations Director, Pauline Scott, where the main topic of discussion was the youth employment strategy. A great visit, which was capped of with the Minister presenting us with our new IIYP plaque.

Minister for Youth and Women's Employment Annabelle Ewing, said:

"The Scottish Government recognises the key role of Scotland's young workforce in delivering sustainable economic growth and we are committed to raising aspiration and employment opportunities for our young people across Scotland.

"I am delighted to present TIGERS LTD with their gold standard Investors In Young People award. It is a real credit to all of their hard-work and efforts in making sure that our young people have the best opportunities while in employment. Their training has also rightly been recognised with an award for being the most innovative and creative by the Scottish Training Federation and should serve as an example of best practice for other employers across Scotland.

"We want to make sure that the next generation of Scots have every encouragement, support and advice they need when entering the employment market so that we can continue to tackle youth unemployment."

John Gibson, Managing Director, TIGERS, highlighted the reason why TIGERS are such strong advocates of IIYP,

" As a Training Provider, TIGERS are engaging with employers, seeking opportunities for young people within their business. How can we expect employers to give the commitment to young workforce development if TIGERS are not willing to employ young people ourselves. We genuinely believe young people can be an asset to businesses and help increase their bottom line.

We are committed to supporting our employer partners who are recruiting and developing young people to gain the recognition they so rightly deserve by achieving IIYP status".
