Early 2018 TIGERS began working in Partnership with Access to Industry, who work across Scotland with unemployed people who face barriers to employment. We specifically work with them at Polmont Young Offenders Institute where they work with inmates who are close to release and have have a strong desire to enter the construction industry upon liberation and make a fresh start.
Having already successfully gained their CSCS card during their employability programme with Access to Industry, TIGERS were asked to deliver additional construction specific qualifications that will give each inmate a more enhanced opportunity of securing employment upon release.
The success of this partnership has already led to trainees securing employment within the industry as-well-as trainees joining TIGERS EF programme and progressing on to the offer of work trials potentially leading to Modern Apprenticeships.
Both the Staff at Access to Industry and Prison Staff in the employability section of Polmont have been 100% behind this programme. They have supported TIGERS in every area, allowing us to build strong ties.
We also do a couple of Stress Management sessions throughout our course days which help trainees to relax and take in the contents of the programmes. These sessions have proven welcome and beneficial.
I feel this construction training will continue to go from strength to strength and hopefully become much more widely available within the prison service.
